DERMAL FILLERS

WHAT IS IT?

First things first: Dermal fillers are not the same as neurotoxins like Botulinium and Nuceiva.

Botulinum and Nuceiva “freezes” muscles to reduce wrinkles.

Fillers on the other hand smooth out skin by filling the wrinkles. Dermal Fillers are made of Hyaluronic acid (HA). It is a substance that naturally occurs in the body. Thanks to its ability to draw moisture to the area that has been injected to add volume. HA is responsible for giving a plump, hydrated look. Most common areas to treat for volume loss is the cheeks, nasolabial folds (laugh lines), temples, jawline, chin and lips. HA breaks down in the body over time and gets adsorbed into the body and drained through lymphatic system. This is why fillers are considered as a temporary treatment. There are many temporary dermal fillers on the market. Affected areas can be treated with a different type of dermal filler based on thickness and whether the HA is cross linked/non croslinked. It is always best to book a consultation to see which type is best for your skin.

WHO BENEFITS THE MOST WITH FILLERS?

As we age, our skin starts to lose its collagen which results in drooping of the skin or loss of volume. Dermal Fillers are a great way to restore the volume in the targeted areas. When we notice our laugh lines (nasolabial lines) getting a little deeper than we like, it is usually from volume loss from the cheek area. When we inject the HA into the cheeks to add volume it lifts the cheek, which in turn lifts the face to soften up the nasal labial folds. We like to refer to dermal filler in the cheeks as a “liquid face lift”. Lips are another area where we see the signs of aging. Once we lose volume in the lip area it creates a deflated looking lip. With HA we can restore or improve the volume as well as symmetry to retrieve a more youthful appearance.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

HA is injected with a syringe into the affected area to add volume or symmetry and it creates a more youthful appearance. The newly injected HA will bind to water molecules to increase volume below the skin to create a plumper appearance. The HA is not permanent and can be corrected or dissolved if needed. HA can typically last anywhere from 9-18 months depending on the area and the amount of movement.

WHAT TO EXPECT OVERALL?

You may experience some pin point bleeding, redness and some swelling. Most of the swelling will be gone within 2-4 days. Many people thinking about fillers are worried about looking “over done”. When injected professionally, filler should look very natural and accentuate your natural features. It is not about the duck lips or over filled cheeks. It requires “numerous” syringes of dermal filler to achieve the “over done” look. We start slow and build up overtime to create natural looking symmetry. It is always best to book a consultation to discuss a customized treatment plan.
