KELOID INJECTIONS

WHAT IS IT?

A keloid is an area of irregular fibrous tissue formed at the site of a scar injury. It is an abnormal rapid increase of scar tissue that forms at the site of the affected skin injury. For example: on the site of a surgical incision or trauma. It does not regress and grow beyond the original margins of the scar. Keloids should not be confused with hypertrophic scars, which are raised scars that do not grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound and may reduce over time.

WHO BENEFITS THE MOST FROM THIS SERVICE?

Keloids are equally common in men and women. Although people with darker skin are more likely to develop them, keloids can occur in people of all skin types. Anyone looking to reduce the size and lighten the colour would be a good candidate for these steroid injections after reviewing their medical history with the medical director.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Corticosteroid solution is injected directly into a keloid, which may help reduce its size.  Steroids break the bond between collagen fibers, which reduces the amount of scar tissue beneath the skin. Steroids also have a powerful anti-inflammatory property, which can help reduce swelling, redness, itching, or tenderness

WHAT TO EXPECT OVERALL?

In the hours after an injection, you can break up scar tissue yourself and improve the effectiveness of the injections by gently massaging the scar. Side effects may include thinning or sunken skin at the site of injection. Itching, slight burning to the area injected.
